Garden of Life
Omega-3 The Real Truth
Products of Nature
With mykind Organics Herbals , Garden of Life adopted the exact same philosophy and principals that we uphold for MyKind Organics vitamins. It all begins with sourcing the highest quality organic plant materials. Selection of herbal farmers and suppliers is probably one of the most challenging parts of the entire process to ensure premium quality organic herbs.
In the United States, only 0.67% of our land is dedicated to organic agricultural with a very small fraction of this being used for organic herbs, most of which are culinary herbs. mykind Organics herbs are, therefore, sourced globally. We identified regions in the world where traditional sources of highly-prized medicinal herbs have been growing for generations.
Knowing the farms and our farmers is critical for us in order to produce Certified USDA Organic and Non-GMO Verified herbs. These partnerships are built over many years, and the farms undergo regular, rigorous testing to achieve and maintain these third party certifications.
In Europe, most of our farmers are third and fourth generation, they also know the history of the soil, the local climate, and they are true experts on the plants that they grow. Often, these organic herbal farms are relatively small and cannot meet larger supply chain needs, so it was important for us to form these partnerships with organic herbal farmers and their co-ops, to help them grow with us over time.
The first & only, full line of herbal products to be Certified USDA Organic, Non-GMO Verified, Certified Gluten Free and Vegan.
After sourcing, the next issue we needed to address was the extraction method used for obtaining each of the active ingredients for our dual-certified herbs. It’s common practice in our industry to use solvents for botanical extracts; these solvents typically include hexane and alcohol derived from genetically modified corn. These were definitely not an option for us. Therefore, we had to set about creating clean extraction methods.
All of our mykind Herbals are created using only a clean extraction process without petroleum-based chemical solvents or genetically- modified corn alcohol. Wherever possible, we utilize water for infusions or steam extraction. We utilize water extraction techniques to gently remove the water-soluble components of the plants. For fat-soluble actives, we only use organic, non-GMO ethanol—never hexane, methanol or any other harsh chemicals.
Third party independent testing at every step of the way is part of the traceability required for all mykind products. Additionally, testing for full botanical identity is imperative to ensure our herbal ingredients are not blended with inferior sources, or with lower quality parts of the same plant, or even a different plant!
Each mykind Herbal product has been expertly formulated in consultation with Dr. Terry Willard, an expert clinical herbalist with over 40 years of practical experience and the author of numerous herbal textbooks. In his herbal master classes, Dr. Terry taught us about the “personality†of the individual herbs and their mechanisms of action and the subsequent benefits each one brings to the body. One key element of designing effective formulas, he said, is to consider the synergy of the herbal ingredients, i.e. how they will perform together in the body. Other herbal products and remedies are based on the individual properties of the herbs and they do not consider the interaction of the herbs which, in many cases, may be beneficial when they work together synergistically. However, they can also often be less effective when they are not correctly combined.
Herbs often work through multiple pathways in the body, so it is essential to work with an expert formulator who understands the mechanisms of action of each herb and their interplay within the body systems. Dr. Willard expertly created our line with synergy at the forefront of his mind. This is critical to produce highly effective formulas.
Convenient Delivery Systems
Rather than just offer tinctures and tablets, we have incorporated new delivery systems into this line to maximize the efficacy of each formulation and to give our consumers additional convenient options—especially for travel and those on–the-go. Whether it’s organic sprays for Sleep formulas, organic clean tablets, organic extracted tinctures, organic elderberry syrup, organic powders, or even our 100% organic fruit-based gummies, Garden of Life has provided a diverse array of organic delivery options for everyone.
Digestibility is Key
Another key component in the formulation of these products, under Dr. Willard’s tutelage, was ensuring the digestibility of the botanicals, especially Turmeric. In a nutshell, there is little benefit including premium organic herbs in a formula unless we know that they are going to be properly digested and their active components (such as the Curcuminoids) are going to get into the systems of the body where they can work effectively. So, we added two carefully-selected, clinically studied probiotic strains to support digestion of the herbs in many of the formulas.
Next, we used fermentation to enhance digestibility. We fermented certain botanicals such as the Organic Turmeric Root and Organic Ginger Root to ensure digestibility, and in the case of ginger, to enhance overall digestion of other botanicals.
Why We Added Organic Black Pepper to Our Turmeric Products
We added Certified Organic Black Pepper to our Turmeric formulas on the expert advice of Dr. Terry Willard. Black pepper and Turmeric combinations have been thoroughly studied and have been shown to increase Turmeric’s bioavailability and activity by as much as 2000% or 20-fold. Substances like curcumin from turmeric, have poor absorbability and break down easily in the liver. This is the reason that black pepper has traditionally been used in combination with turmeric. “It just gets better results,†said Dr. Willard. Organic Black Pepper has been shown to promote the flow of gastric juices and enzyme production, improving digestibility.
